 Reseach Background

The Plant Molecular Phylogenetics Laboratory at SKKU employs a variety of techniques to investigate evolutionary relationships, classification systems, speciation mechanisms, character evolution, and biogeography in flowering plants at various taxonomic levels. Specifically, we are interested in origin and evolution of endemic plants on oceanic islands (e.g., Jeju and Ulleung Island in Korea; The Canary Islands in Spain; The Juan Fernandez Islands in Chile). In addition, we conduct research on conservation genetics of rare plants, invasion of weedy species, homoploid and polyploidy hybrid speciation, phylogeography, and biogeography. We are determined to unravel the phylogenetic patterns and underlying processes generating plant diversity by utilizing diverse molecular markers and inter-bridging different disciplines and approaches.

Evolution of Island Plants

Islands are natural laboratories where we can study evolution in vivo. In oceanic islands like the Canaries and the Juan Fernandez Islands, diverse ecological niches act as an important driving force in plant evolution. Using genetic, transcriptomic, and/or genomic research, our research examines evolutionary histories and mechanisms underlying plant evolution, as well as phylogenetic relationships between island and continental plants. In addition, we investigate the anagenetic speciation of plant endemics on Ulleung Island, Korea.

Phylogenetic Inference on Evolutionary History

By studying the phylogenetic relationships and revealing evolutionary history of plant species, we can gain insight into further biological studies and discover new plant resources. We focus on plant species distributed in East Asia, including Korea and neighboring countries. Our team is currently working on phylogeographic studies to understand species divergence and inter-continental disjunction, as well as systematic studies on closely related species to better understand diversification and radiation, gene flow, and hybridizations.

Population Genetics for Conservation

Population genetics is the study of genetic variation within and among populations and the evolutionary factors that explain this variation. Population genetic study provides crucial information on the patterns of genetic diversity and population structure in endemic and highly threatened plant species. We carry out conservation genetic studies of threatened vascular plant species in the Red List of Korea, assessing their genetic diversity patterns and developing conservation strategies or management programs. As part of our invasive species management efforts, we also investigate invasive species in order to determine genetic diversity, geographic origins, and dispersal routes.

Plant Taxonomy & Floristic Research

Classification, description, identification, and nomenclature form the basis of traditional taxonomic study and provide fundamental knowledge in pursuing future phylogenetic and evolutionary studies. Our team conducts floristic and vegetation studies to better understand the composition of plant species and their assemblages and biodiversity. We grasp essential knowledge on conservation of biodiversity and acquisition of biological resources/information via description of new and unrecorded species, morphological investigation, floristic study, and natural habitat and ecological studies.
